Why Leadership Breakdowns Aren’t Strategy Problems

There’s a persistent myth in leadership: If you just find the right strategy, everything else will fall into place.

In my experience working with leaders—and what we discussed in a recent conversation on Business by the Bay —that’s rarely where things break down.

Most leaders I meet are not under-skilled.

They’re not under-informed.

They’re not lacking frameworks.

They’re overwhelmed, reactive, or stuck in patterns they can’t see.

And those patterns don’t live in a slide deck.

They live in the body.

The Hidden Layer of Leadership

You can be executing a strong strategy and still find yourself:

• tightening up in difficult conversations

• avoiding necessary feedback

• pushing your team when you mean to support them

• feeling a constant low-grade pressure that never quite turns off

This isn’t a strategy issue.

It’s an internal state issue.

Leadership is not just a cognitive act.

It’s a physiological and relational one.

Your nervous system, your habits under stress, and your embodied patterns all shape how you lead—often more than your intentions do.

The Blind Spot Problem

One of the most important ideas we explored is this:

You can’t change what you’re not aware of.

And most leadership blind spots are not visible through thinking alone.

They show up in:

• how quickly you react

• how much space you give others

• the subtle signals your body sends in moments of pressure

These are not things you solve with more analysis.

They’re things you notice through awareness.

Why This Matters for Teams

When a leader shifts their internal state, the impact ripples outward.

Communication changes.

Trust changes.

Decision-making changes.
